Conophytum Maughanii is a soil-embedded, subterranean species with windowed leaves that usually has only one body or rarely forms small group with few heads. They are very fat, soft, jelly-like about 20 mm wide and 10-15 mm tall, broader than tall, compressed cylindrical, seen from the side oblong or squarely shaped of a yellowish-green to pale orange colour with very pale, yellowish-green windows turning purple-red in the summer.  In the spring, the skin begins to thin and loses colour, until finally, when the hot, dry days of summer arrive they go dormant they seemingly retreat into a dry, papery cocoon spun from their own skins. In Africa, these shield allow them to endure harsh summer conditions until the autumn growing season when they bloom again.

Plant lithops seeds using conventional growing methods:

    1. Mix equal parts of potting mix and perlite. Moisten the mix with water, and fill it into a pot with drainage holes, up to about 1/2 inch from the top.
    2. Sprinkle the seeds over the soil. Don't bury the seeds.
    3. Fill a spray bottle with water and mist the soil with it. Try to keep the soil moist throughout the germination period. Cover the pot with plastic wrap or a glass pane to help promote the soil moisture retention.
    4. Place the pot in a warm, sunlit area. Aim for a temperature of approximately 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Place a heating mat underneath the pot, if needed. Expect the seeds to germinate within about 2-3 weeks.
    5. Transplant the seedlings to individual pots when the plants start to crowd and are big enough to handle. Place the pots in a sunny windowsill.
